Create Your AWS Managed Microsoft AD Active Directory

To create a new directory, follow these steps. Before starting this process, ensure you have completed the prerequisites specified in AWS Managed Microsoft AD prerequisites.

Create AWS Managed Microsoft AD Directory

  1. In the AWS Directory Service dashboard, select Directories, then choose Set up directory.

  1. On the Select directory type page, select AWS Managed Microsoft AD, then click Next.

  1. On the Enter directory information page, provide the following information:

    • Edition

    • Choose from Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition of AWS Managed Microsoft AD. For more information on editions, refer to AWS Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory.

    • Directory DNS name

    • The full name for the directory, such as wsfc.example.com.

    • Directory NetBIOS name

    • A short name for the directory, such as WSFC.

    • Directory description

    • An optional description for the directory.

    • Admin password

    • The password for the Admin directory. The directory creation process will create an Admin account with the username “Admin” and this password.

    • The Admin Directory password must not include the word “admin.”

    • The Admin Directory password must be case-sensitive and between 8 and 64 characters long, including at least one character from three out of four of the following types:

      • Lowercase letters (a-z)
      • Uppercase letters (A-Z)
      • Numbers (0-9)
      • Non-alphanumeric characters (~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|(){}[]:;"’<>,.?/)

    • Confirm password

    • Re-enter the Admin password.

  1. On the Choose VPC and subnets page, provide the following information, then click Next.

    • VPC
    • The VPC for the directory.
    • Subnets
    • Select the subnets. Two subnets must be in different Availability Zones.

  1. On the Review & create page, review the directory information and make any necessary changes. When the information is accurate, click Create directory.

  1. Directory creation takes from 20 to 40 minutes. Once created, the Status value changes to Active.
